How to choose the right software to insert images in videos

Here’s how to find a tool that lets you add logos, photos, and pictures effortlessly.

Easy to use

Adding visuals to video shouldn't feel like solving a puzzle. Look for a video editor that lets you drag, drop, and adjust image overlays in seconds.

Full customization

Not all picture overlays should look the same. Choose a tool that lets you resize images, mask them into shapes, adjust opacity, and position them anywhere.

Smart suggestions

No idea what to add? Choose software that recommends relevant images based on your video’s topic. So you’re never stuck staring at a (blank) screen.

High-quality output

Blurry logos? Pixelated overlays? No thanks. The best video editors keep images crisp and high-resolution, even after exporting.

Media library & uploads

Not every tool gives you options. Find a platform that offers built-in royalty-free images and lets you upload your own for full creative freedom.

All-in-one workflow

Jumping between apps just to add a logo? Pick software that lets you record, edit, and put images in videos in one seamless workflow—no extra software needed.

FAQ

What is an image overlay?

An image overlay is a photo placed on top of another picture or video to create a layered visual effect. It typically has varying transparency depending on how you want the final output to look. Image overlays enhance storytelling, and with Riverside's intuitive tools, you can use them to produce engaging and informative video content.

How can I add a picture to a video online?

With Riverside’s online video editor, adding images to videos is simple:

  • Log in to Riverside and upload a video to the editor, or record your own.
  • Click on "Images" in the editing toolbar.
  • Upload your own photo or choose from the built-in stock library.
  • Resize, position, and adjust the image to fit your video.
  • Drag the edges of the image track on the timeline to set how long the image appears on screen.

Can I add a logo to videos online?

Yes! Adding a logo to your video is one of the easiest ways to brand your content. With Riverside, this is how:

  • Upload or record a video to open in the editor.
  • Click on “Brand” in the editing toolbar, then select “Logo”.
  • Upload your own logo. Resize and position it where you want it. You can also customize its opacity and shape.

The best part is once you save your logo to your brand presets, you won't need to upload it each time.

And if you want to add your logo to live videos, then go to your recording studio. Click “Brand” on the toolbar, and just like above, upload your logo.

Can I edit an image overlay after adding it to my video?

Yes! If you need to adjust an image after adding it, you can. Click on the image you want to adjust in the video preview, and a toolbar should appear with the following buttons:

  • Fill video: Resize the image to take up the full video screen.
  • Mask: Choose a shape to mask the image over.
  • Opacity: Adjust opacity for a subtle or bold effect.
  • Delete: You know what this does - deletes the image.
  • Three dotted menu: Click to move the image backward or forwards or to duplicate it.

To change the duration of an image, click on it on the editing timeline. Drag the edges to lengthen or shorten how long it stays on screen.

Can I layer multiple images on a video?

With Riverside, you can layer multiple images, logos, and graphics to create dynamic videos with depth. If you want to adjust how they’re layered follow these steps:

  • Click on the image in the video preview to bring up the toolbar.
  • Tap on the three-dotted menu.
  • Click “Bring forward” or “Send backward” to adjust where images are in the layering order.
